Hercegszántó–Bački Breg II, our Programme’s Operation of Strategic Importance, will improve border infrastructure and connectivity between Hungary and Serbia.
The opening conference of the Hercegszántó–Bački Breg II project took place on 9 October 2026 at the Science and Technology Park Novi Sad. Implemented under the Interreg VI-A IPA Hungary–Serbia Programme 2021–2027, the project aims to improve border infrastructure and create better conditions for freight transport between the two countries.
With a total budget of just over EUR 3 million, 85% of which is provided by the European Union, the project builds on several years of joint development and investment. Drawing on documentation and permits prepared through previous projects, alongside earlier investments in access roads, it now moves towards completing infrastructure construction and equipping the border crossing on both sides. The need to develop this crossing was identified during the preparation of the Programme as a shared strategic interest of Hungary and Serbia. Increasing its capacity is expected to ease pressure on other border crossings, improve access to markets and transport corridors, and create more favourable business conditions. Businesses, agricultural producers, transport operators, travellers and local communities across the border region will benefit from the project.
The conference programme covered the project’s strategic importance, its contribution to regional development and transport connectivity, and the activities planned by the project partners. The partnership comprises Hungary’s Ministry of Construction and Transport as Lead Partner, Public Enterprise “Roads of Serbia” and Public Enterprise “Urban and Spatial Planning Institute of Vojvodina” as partners from Republic of Serbia. Their responsibilities and activities include infrastructure works, preparation of documentation, coordination and communication activities.
As the Programme’s first and only Operation of Strategic Importance, Hercegszántó–Bački Breg II demonstrates how long-term planning and cooperation between partner institutions translate European support into tangible infrastructure and lasting benefits for people on both sides of the border.
We will soon publish the project subpage, with more relavant information about this OSI.
